WooCommerce is the world's most popular eCommerce plugin for WordPress, powering over 30% of all online stores globally. Whether you want to sell physical products, digital downloads or services directly from your WordPress site, WooCommerce is the go-to solution — free, flexible and massively extensible.
This guide walks you through every step: installing WooCommerce, configuring it correctly and making sure all the critical settings are in place before you publish your first product.
Before installation, make sure you have:
If your store is expected to grow or handle consistent traffic, consider a NVMe VPS for dedicated resources and speeds far beyond shared hosting.
Installation takes less than two minutes directly from WordPress:
WooCommerceAfter activation, WooCommerce launches a Setup Wizard to guide you through the basics. You can follow it or skip it — we'll cover everything manually below so you understand each setting.
Navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → General.
Under Units, set:
- Weight unit: kg
- Dimension unit: cm
Always click Save changes after editing each section.
Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Payments.
WooCommerce ships with several built-in methods:
| Method | Description |
|---|---|
| Direct bank transfer (BACS) | Customer transfers to your bank — confirmed manually |
| Check payments | Payment by cheque — rarely used |
| Cash on delivery | Pay on delivery — very common in Eastern Europe |
| WooPayments / Stripe | Credit/debit card — requires a Stripe account |
Recommended setup:
- Enable Cash on delivery for local markets
- Integrate Stripe: create an account at stripe.com and install the official WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway plugin
- For local processors (Maib, Euplatesc, etc.), look for dedicated plugins in the WordPress marketplace
For each active payment method, click Set up or Manage to complete the title displayed to customers, instructions and account details.
Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Shipping.
Example Flat Rate configuration:
Method title: Standard Courier
Tax status: None
Cost: 5.99
Create separate zones for international shipping if needed.
Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Tax (if the tab is missing, enable it in General → Enable taxes).
Example tax table row:
Country: US | State: CA | Rate %: 8.25 | Tax name: Sales Tax | Shipping: ✓
Go to Products → Add New.
| Tab | What to fill in |
|---|---|
| General | Regular price, sale price, SKU |
| Inventory | Stock quantity, SKU, backorder policy |
| Shipping | Weight and dimensions |
| Attributes | Color, size (for variable products) |
| SEO (Yoast) | Meta title and description if Yoast is installed |
Available product types:
- Simple product — most common
- Variable product — with variations (color, size)
- Grouped product — a set of simple products
- External/Affiliate product — redirects to another site
- Virtual / Downloadable — digital goods (e-books, software, courses)
During installation, WooCommerce automatically creates these core pages:
Verify the page assignments under WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced → Page setup. If any pages are missing, regenerate them via WooCommerce → Status → Tools → Create default WooCommerce pages.
Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Emails.
Enable and customise:
- New Order — admin notification
- Order Confirmed — customer confirmation
- Order Completed — fulfilment notification
- Customer Invoice — manual invoice
Set the "From" address to your official business email on your own domain (e.g. [email protected]). If you need professional email on a custom domain, the CLIQHOST server management service covers full email server configuration.
